Have you ever been to a wine tasting party? Want to know how to throw a wine tasting party? You don’t have to know wine to have a good time at this party. You just have to know what you like.

Hosting one is easier than it sounds. You get a bunch of friends together. Everyone brings their favorite bottle of wine and an appetizer to share. See half of the work is already done!

The bottles are all tasted blindly and ranked. The votes are counted at the end of the night and the person who brought the winning bottle gets to take home a prize. You can find some fun wine related prizes for $30/under. And of course, you can give out a booby prize for the worst bottle of the night. If you do that, be sure to warn people ahead of time that it will happen so no one has hurt feelings. Or tell them to buck up. Better yet, hand them a glass of wine.

Getting ready for the wine tasting party

How do you wrap the bottles? Easy. Go down to your favorite liquor store and ask if they have any brown paper wine bottle bags you can buy. Otherwise, they can be found on the internet. Wrap each one up. Be sure to tape them shut at the top, so you can pour the wine, but not see the bottle. Use a Sharpie and put a big number on it.

Set up all of the bottles in the “tasting area” also known as the breakfast bar in your kitchen and let ‘er rip!

Hint: Be sure to separate the white wines from the reds and have people taste the whites first.

Also, have a dump bucket (or pitcher) handy so people can just taste and not over-indulge (if they so choose). You might want to also provide water and other non-alcoholic beverages for the designated drivers of the evening.

This can be a great holiday party, summer barbeque or picnic, ladies’ night, or just because it’s fun.
